7/2/2023 0 Comments Weekends awa![]() It’s the remaining 110 minutes of the movie that ruin everything. We are able to see love and conflict between two friends, learn more about their pasts and have fun anticipating when the nightmare is going to begin. The most disappointing part of the film is that the first twenty-or-so minutes are very strong. Days of searching, stress and revelations follow. Rob and Kate’s ex-boyfriend Jay (Parth Thakerar) think Kate is playing a “self-centered” trick on Beth, but Beth panics and alerts the police. Realizing she doesn’t remember anything from the night before, Beth begins to panic. This is where the movie truly starts: the apartment is wrecked with drops of blood and clothes on the floor. Arguing ensues, brief flashes of the nightclub appear and then the screen cuts to Beth waking up in the Airbnb - no Kate in sight. Kate suggests Beth should have a one night stand, which Beth does not take well. After some convincing, they arrive at the club, where two men start flirting with them. ![]() At the end of the night, Beth is ready to go home, but Kate insists that they have to go clubbing. The two are out to eat when Beth confides that she’s going through a rough patch with her husband Rob (Luke Norris). Kate is your typical outgoing, beautiful blonde woman, while Beth is a bit more serious and introverted. In this case, new mother Beth (Leighton Meester) and recent divorcee Kate (Christina Wolfe) plan a weekend away to Croatia to catch up, both eager to have fun and let loose. The film starts like any other psychological thriller - a few friends are trying to have a fun time together abroad when, suddenly, disaster strikes. Who wouldn’t want to watch a film that depicts the idyllic backgrounds of Split, Croatia while drawing you to the edge of your seat? Unfortunately, this beauty is completely diminished by poor acting, ridiculous plot lines and low-budget feel of Netflix’s latest movie to grace its “Top 10.” The Weekend Away is out on Netflix from March 3, 2022.“The Weekend Away” had the potential to be the next go-to tourist psychological thriller in the vein of the “Taken” franchise - it has the scenery, the celebrity name recognition and the drama. Overall, for entertainment value (and a kick-ass Leighton Meester), this Netflix thriller is worth checking out. For me, The Weekend Away is still better than some of the Harlan Coben adaptions. ![]() And this one does suffer from having a lot of twists and turns in a very short runtime. Especially since it could then have been less forced. Since I haven’t read the book, I can’t tell you how close of an adaption it is, but it does work as a solid story.Īctually, it has a distinct Harlan Coben vibe and could possibly have worked better as a series. ![]() Also, Sarah Alderson has been a staff writer on the S.W.A.T. series, so she isn’t new to writing scripts. That is usually a good thing when done right. The novel was written by Sarah Alderson who also wrote the screenplay for this adaptation. You may be familiar with Kim Farrant’s previous work if you’ve watched the 2015 thriller-mystery Strangerland starring Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes, and Hugo Weaving.Īs mentioned earlier, The Weekend Away is based on a novel. ![]() The is a lot of story to cover in a relatively short amount of time. Kim Farrant is the director of The Weekend Away and does a very solid job. In The Weekend Away, Meester is very bare-faced and natural, which serves as perfect contrast to the Kate character. Kate is played equally well by Christina Wolfe ( Batwoman), who has a lot less screen time for obvious reasons. You’ll probably recognize Leighton Meester from the Gossip Girl series or maybe the 2011 thriller The Roommate. She plays the character as a very laidback and positive person, who does find her fighting spirit very fast, when met with various challenges. Of course, the police are very little help and overall, she is met with distain for being a “party girl” (despite the fact that she really isn’t) and to just take it easy. Now, she has to try and recreate the previous night to find out what happened to Kate. After a night out, Beth wakes up with a massive hangover, few memories of the night before and no Kate in sight. While Beth is wanting to enjoy spending time with her best friend and relaxing a bit, Kate is all about he party scene. However, Beth’s best friend, Kate, recently got divorced and convinces Beth to join her for a “weekend away” in Croatia. She lives in London with her husband and their very young daughter, Aster, who is still just a baby. The star of The Weekend Away is Leighton Meester as Beth. ![]()
